Trip Details
Day 1 : Morning- Chinese Muslim Village  (Hui Ethnic Group)
In the morning we will drive up to a Chinese Muslim village located north of Weishan old town. There we will visit the village Mosque and their local history museum that commemorates the history of the village of traders and houses, inside is a unique collection of relics that the local builders and traders preserved from their trips. After our visit we will sit down to enjoy a family meal prepared by the descendant of the trader family.
Afternoon- Yi Macrame Bracelet Workshop, Yi Dancing (Yi Ethnic Group)
After leaving the Hui village, we will visit a small village of less than 300 families – all of Austroasiatic Yi ethnic minority background.Our host is an official Intangible Heritage Guardian of the Dali Yi minority traditional crafts. The workshops (either embroidery or macrame bracelet workshops) will be led by a local Yi instructor from the village.The workshop will take place in a 200-year-old Dali style traditional house. The house now operates as a museum exhibiting Yi traditional costumes and accessories and also as a space for the villagers to work at and the participate in handcraft workshops.We will also experience a Yi style local dancing and other Yi ethnic performances presented by the local villagers. Then we will enjoy a Yi local dinner with the family and a bonfire tea drinking and ethnic dancing in the center of 200-year-old courtyard.
About the Yi:The Yi people of southwest China, sometimes referred to as Nuosuo or Lolo, number close to nine million, making them the seventh largest ethnic minority in China. Due to the geographical barrier, most Yi people live in remote areas near mountaintops, which explains the over 100 Yi sub-groups in southwest China, each with their own culture and language.The crafts are mostly handwoven and used by the Yi people to pass down and share their traditions to guests and newer generations. The traditional handcraft culture has been utilized by locals to provide a new, gentle industry to a rural region that has gradually lost its population over time.
Day 2: Pottery Making Workshop (Dali)
Experience one of Yunnan’s most treasured cultural exports first hand with a traditional pottery making class!  Located in an ancient village a pottery workshop will be held, using the traditional clay throwing methods of the local people.  The village has over 600 years of experience in producing pottery from exquisite vases, to bowls and plates. Guests are also welcomed to get creative and choose to make something of their own!  The pottery creations will be dried and fired in the kiln and shipped to the guests after a month when they are ready for use (delivery fee for shipping abroad is not included in the tour). There are currently 30 preserved dragon kiln sites, five of which still use wood to keep burning. Throughout the small village you will find plenty of rammed-earth complexes as well as alluring cherry blossoms that can be seen blooming in the cold winter months.  After the pottery workshop, we will drive up to Lijiang for a local style courtyard dinner and will stay in Lijiang for the night. Before we head back to the hotel, an ethnic style square dancing shouldn’t be missed from 8-9pm every night.
Day 3: Liming Ethnic Farmer’s Market and Hike (Lisu Ethnic group)
In the morning, we will browse through the ethnic farmer’s market in this little town like the locals do and sample some of the most amazing local specialties.  Ethnic markets in Yunnan are great places to observe the unique multicultural styles and minority cultures that live in the area.  Small cities and townships host these gatherings usually once every five to ten days, depending on the venue.  Many of the minority women dress their best (traditional colorful costumes) on a market day.  Local artists and farmers regularly come to sell their crafts and produce so you’ll be able to experience all of Yunnan’s authentic cultural identities gathered in one place!  You will be able to sample scrumptious Yunnan snacks and dishes freshly made by the nearby villagers who set up their stalls at a different market every day to make a living.
In the afternoon, we will head on to a local trail for hike to enjoy a panoramic view of the stunning landscape of Liming. Situated at the threshold of Laojunshan National Park lies the charming town of Liming, renowned for its rich biodiversity and nestled within the esteemed Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage site.  As part of China’s initiative to establish national parks, Liming became a pivotal point in the conservation efforts, with The Nature Conservancy joining forces with local stakeholders since the project’s inception in 2008.  Venturing southward into Liju Village, a less developed enclave within the park, conservation endeavors have been intensified.  Here, amidst the pristine wilderness near the core protected zone, concerted efforts aim to foster sustainability, particularly focusing on preserving the habitat of the iconic Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys. The striking sandstone formations that adorn Liming’s landscape bear witness to millennia of geological processes –  sedimentation, uplift, and erosion – culminating in the unique Danxia landform exclusive to China, though not confined solely to Liming.  Within the park’s expanse, a diverse tapestry of ethnic groups call it home, with the Lisu people constituting the predominant population alongside the Bai, Pumi, Yi, and Han communities.Liming’s allure extends beyond its natural wonders, offering enthusiasts over 200 premier crack climbing routes adorning the canyon walls, some stretching up to an impressive 200 meters in length.

Day 4: Bai Benzhu Worship Experience (Bai Ethnic Group)
Come morning, our journey will lead us to Jianchuan, renowned for its intricate woodcarving craftsmanship and inhabited predominantly by the Yunnan Bai People.  Here, we will partake in a truly distinctive experience—the local worship of Bai deities.  Central to the Bai cultural identity, Benzhu are revered as local protector deities across the Dali region. In Jianchuan County, the practice of Benzhu worship intertwines closely with Azhali Buddhism. Within the Dali vicinity, virtually every Bai village boasts a Benzhu Temple, serving as the sacred abode for these revered protector spirits.  Typically, these spirits are embodiment of historical figures – be they local heroes, esteemed monarchs, or revered generals – whose noble deeds have earned them the reverence of the community.Each Benzhu deity presides over their designated festival day, marked by a plethora of activities varying from locale to locale.  Jianchuan stands out as a bastion of traditional Bai culture, with its populace still predominantly Bai to this day.  Here, the ancient tenets of Azhali Buddhism endure, and Benzhu rituals are often conducted by Azhali practitioners, lending a distinct flavor to the festivities unique from those in the broader Erhai region.

Following a delectable lunch at a traditional Bai-style courtyard house, our journey continues to the nearby town of Heqing.  Our route takes us over a scenic mountain adorned with wind turbines, promising breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, including both Jianchuan and Heqing.  Once in Heqing, renowned for its exquisite silverware and copperware, our itinerary takes us to Xinhua Village, nestled at the heart of this bustling town.  This village boasts a rich heritage of silver craftsmanship spanning millennia.  Our first stop is a local museum showcasing a stunning collection of silver and copper crafts sourced from the region, offering a glimpse into the area’s artisanal mastery.   Subsequently, we’ll have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the age-old tradition of silver craftsmanship by visiting a local family renowned for their expertise in the field.  Here, we’ll roll up our sleeves and partake in a hands-on workshop, crafting our very own copper coffee mug under the guidance of skilled artisans.  This personalized creation promises to serve as a cherished memento of our time spent delving into Heqing’s rich cultural tapestry.
Day 5: Electric Mountain Bike Trip
Prepare for an exhilarating adventure as we embark on an electric mountain bike excursion along the enchanting trail stretching from the base of the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, towering at an impressive 5600 meters, to the renowned Tiger Leaping Gorge. Covering a distance of approximately 130 kilometers, this single-day journey promises to be a memorable odyssey through awe-inspiring landscapes.  Please ensure you are in good physical condition, as this expedition will demand endurance.  Our ultimate destination is Baoshan Naxi Stone Village, where we will find respite for the night.  Nestled amidst the rugged terrain, Baoshan Stone Village boasts a rich history dating back to the 1200s during the Yuan Dynasty. Perched atop a colossal mushroom-like rock formation, the village enjoys natural fortifications, with sheer cliffs enveloping three sides and the Jinsha River safeguarding the fourth.  Accessible only through two stone gates to the north and south, the village accommodates approximately 100 families and stands as a testament to the well-preserved Naxi architectural heritage.  Prepare to immerse ourselves in the cultural richness and tranquil beauty of this historic settlement as we rest and recharge for the night.
Day 6: Stone Village (Naxi Ethnic Group)
Following a serene night’s rest in the secluded confines of the village, we will embark on a leisurely hike, immersing ourselves in the picturesque surroundings of Baoshan Naxi Stone Village.  Meandering through the labyrinthine pathways both within and around the village, we’ll be treated to a surreal panorama of mountain cliffs, the glistening Jinsha River, and the storied history encapsulated within the village’s 100 sturdy stone houses.  As we traverse the rugged terrain, each step will unveil a tapestry of natural wonders and cultural heritage, inviting us to delve deeper into the timeless allure of this remote settlement.  With every twist and turn, we’ll uncover hidden gems of architectural marvels and hear whispers of tales from centuries past, all against the backdrop of awe-inspiring vistas that seem to transcend the boundaries of reality.  Prepare to be captivated by the otherworldly beauty that surrounds us, as we embark on a journey of discovery and contemplation amidst the tranquil embrace of Baoshan Naxi Stone Village.
In the afternoon, we will drive down to Lijiang town and enjoy a family-style wild mushroom hotpot to end the trip.

Departure: We will commence our journey in Dali. Kindly ensure your arrival in Dali for group dinner and hotel check-in.
Food: We prioritize locally sourced, ecological, and organic ingredients, advocating for a low-carbon, eco-friendly, and healthy diet. The meals provided during the tour will predominantly consist of plant-based options, supplemented by select high-quality local non-vegan choices or fully vegan alternatives.
Restrooms: Throughout the tour, public or local-style restroom facilities are accessible, while western-style toilets are predominantly available in hotels and large shopping complexes.Environmental Awareness: During this tour, our guide will introduce you to our plastic-free lifestyle. We will assist you in minimizing the use of single-use plastic disposables by encouraging refusal and offering alternatives.
「What to Pack」
  1. Ensure you pack comfortable footwear, waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, a swimsuit, towels, a toothbrush, tooth tablets, and soap bars for both body and hair. Additionally, we suggest bringing along a reusable shopping bag.
  2. Reusable bowls, bamboo chopsticks, spoons, and water bottles will be provided for guests. However, we strongly encourage you to bring your own reusable items.
  3. As part of our eco-friendly initiative, we will furnish you with an eco-travel gift box for use during the tour. This includes items such as a bamboo toothbrush, tooth tablets, and soap bars.

In our efforts to minimize our carbon footprint, we employ several key strategies:
  • Experiences: We exclusively feature experiences provided by local artisans, artists, and villagers, ensuring that most materials and tools are locally sourced to mitigate carbon emissions. Throughout our tours, we actively avoid single-use items, providing reusable bowls, cups, chopsticks, and shopping bags, while encouraging guests to bring their own.
  • Dining: Embracing a philosophy of low carbon, healthy, and locally sourced plant-forward cuisine, we adhere to the 80-20 principle, with at least 80% of our meals being vegan, if not fully plant-based.
  • Transport: For small groups, we prioritize the use of electric vehicles, leveraging Yunnan’s remarkably clean electricity, which boasts a high proportion of renewable energy sources. Larger groups are accommodated through shared transportation, typically buses.
  • Accommodation: We opt for locally owned accommodations over international hotels, often managed by local villagers or businesses. Staff and supplies are locally sourced, and we advocate for the removal of single-use items in rooms, replacing them with reusable and sustainable alternatives. Additionally, we provide guests with travel-size eco-friendly products and encourage them to bring their own.
